Irene couldn't believe Barry had murdered two people, and broke up with him. Irene was pleased, however, when Tasha saw sense and left the Believers after they tried to kill her. Phillips was predominately a stage actress but enjoyed working on the show. Not disappointed by Angie's death, Irene was later shocked when Angie's past came back to haunt her instead in the form of Tasha Andrews . Irene adopts homeless Tasha but Angie's cousin, Josie Russell , turned up in town demanding legal custody of Tasha. She's also the ex-wife of Murdoch Roberts and the former fiancee of Mike O'Reilly and Ken Smith. She's the grandmother of Paul Roberts, Mike Roberts and Luc Patterson.
She was very protective of her younger brother Damian and despaired of his friendship with Shane Parrish. She later stuck up for Adam Cameron after he accidentally killed Bobby Marshall in a boating accident. She battled an addiction to uppers when trying to cram for her HSC and it was her mum Irene who came to her rescue. She was also supportive of Sophie Simpson when she realised she was pregnant.

Damian is mortified when Sally Fletcher , his foster sister, develops a crush on him and kisses him when he is asleep and even more so when Shane reveals the fact to the whole school. Irene arrives in Summer Bay as the alcoholic mother of three children, Nathan, Damian and Fin, being fostered by Pippa Ross. Having hit rock bottom after an unhappy marriage, she had started drinking heavily as a coping mechanism, and it was soon revealed that she had used violence towards Damian and Nathan on occasions while under the influence.
Haydn convinces Fin to help him with a plan to win enough money to pay Michael and Pippa back but his horse loses. Finlay first appears as a runaway who unsuccessfully attempts to get a free meal from the Diner and sleeps at the boat shed. In one of the Roberts siblings first storylines with their alcoholic mother, Irene falls down the stairs and claims that Damian and Finlay pushed her. Irene later wants Damian to leave with her, but Finlay manages to convince Damian to live his life in Summer Bay.
